Dear Room 20 Families,
We jumped right back into our work without even missing a beat during this first week following April vacation! Check out what we were up to:
Math: Our mathematicians started a new unit on decimals. Since they worked so hard on our fractions unit, they are already off to a great start with decimals! This week, we identified tenths and hundredths on a place value chart and using place value blocks and practiced writing fractions as decimals.
Reading: This week in reading, we finished reading Number the Stars! It had a great ending and many of the students shared that it was one of their favorite books of all time. The 6 book clubs started new books (we are still working with historical fiction from the WWII time period), and students also started working on a historical fiction project.
Writing: This week in writing, students continued to compose their literary essays based on the book Fox. Most students finished their essays and are now publishing.
Science: Our scientists started a new unit on energy transfers and did some reading and vocabulary exploration in our student readers. They also started a lever launch investigation with the focus question: How does increasing the effort force on one end of a lever affect how far the lever launches a load from the opposite end?
Social Studies: This week, students finished their study of the Midwest region! They completed their state brochures and played Jeopardy to review for the quiz. We will be starting the Southwest region on Monday!
Reminders:
