Dear Room 20 Families,
Check out what we were up to this week!
Math: This week, our mathematicians worked hard developing concepts related to fraction decomposition. Students applied their new skills by showing decomposition with tape diagrams (bar models), number bonds, and both addition and multiplication sentences.
Reading: This week in reading, we continued our unit on non-fiction. Students were grouped into research teams and each team was given an extreme weather/natural disaster topic (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, tsunamis, and earthquakes). Students made a research plan with their teams and decided which team members would research each sub-topic. We used a variety of sources (books, articles, the internet, etc.) to conduct our research - students practiced taking thoughtful and organized notes.
Writing: This week in writing, we continued our opinion writing unit! Students worked on planning and drafting their first two paragraphs which included a main idea of why someone was important to them, as well as supporting details.
Science: Our scientists learned about what different types of engineers do and thought about how our world would be different without engineers. Students also started an engineering design project in which they have to solve a problem of a parking lot that keeps flooding. Teams of students were tasked to create a more permeable concrete for the parking lot. They are doing really well with this challenge so far!
Social Studies: In continuing our immigration unit, we read a book called The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco. After reading, each student started to create their own quilt squares. After students are finished, we will be putting all of our quilt squares together to make a large class quilt for display.
Reminders:
