Dear Room 20 Families,
Time is flying! How have we already made it to February vacation? Take a look at what we've been up to this week:
Math: Taking a quick pause from our hard work with fractions, our mathematicians worked on collecting, analyzing, and graphing data in a line plot. They also practiced interpreting line plots and worked on some word problems related to their data.
Reading: This week in reading, students presented their research projects that they had created on Google Slides. The research teams did a great job presenting their material to the class and we loved seeing how creative they were! You can see pictures of the research teams under the photos tab.
Writing: This week in writing, students continued to work on publishing some of their poetry from earlier in the year. They also wrote friendly letters to someone who they care about for Valentine's Day.
Science: Our scientists analyzed data related to the salmon population out west. They noticed a trend in the data: the salmon population has dramatically decreased over time. They also looked at data related to the number of dams that have been built along the rivers in which the salmon swim and notice that over time, the number of dams increased. So, they determined that the increase in dams have caused the salmon population to decrease and they will be talking about possible solutions to help alleviate this issue.
Social Studies: This week, we continued our unit on the Southeast region. Students read about the land, water, and climate of the Southeast, as well as the products and natural resources that are common in that region. We are gearing up to start a state research project after vacation!
Other News: The Museum of Science visited Birch Meadow this morning! Our students had an awesome time with a wind energy engineering activity in which they tested the size, shape, angle, and color of blades for wind turbines! Pictures from the MOS visit can be seen under our photos tab!
